Fledgling Jason Steed, Book 1.

The apocalypse began with the thundering sounds of helicopters….

British Sea Cadet Jason Steed was on summer camp on retired Navy Frigate HMS Stoke just off the Jakarta coast on that tranquil summer afternoon when hell was unleashed before his eyes. Jason’s happy world is turned upside down when without warning, chaos and carnage reigned. He watched as his friends became victim to barbaric mass slaughter. Caught up in a failed military mission, with a threat of nuclear attack hanging in the balance, alone and hungry. Could the 11-year-old summon the will to survive and save his country?

Joe Craig. Award winning author of the Jimmy Coates series.

This is a book I just had to read in one sitting. The pace is unlike any thriller I’ve read before, while the period setting and the backstory built up around the characters mark it out as something different from other action adventure books for a young audience. Basically, you have to check out Fledgling: Jason Steed. He’ll win your heart, then get it pumping with adrenalin.

It’s James Bond meets Karate Kid, and if either of them ever met Jason Steed they’d be in big trouble. (Joe Craig)

FLEDGLING (reviewed on August 1, 2010)

How does a boy turn into a hero? Growing up in Hong Kong, Jason never thought about it. Having lost his mother at birth, been neglected by his father and raised by a succession of nannies, Jason is drawn to the discipline of the martial arts at an early age. He conquers them one by one, earning black belts in all. Looking for new challenges, it’s not long before he’s sneaking onto the nearby naval base to teach himself to fly on flight simulators. By the time his father relocates them to England, this 11-year-old is not like the other boys at school. But it isn’t until he joins the Sea Cadets and goes on a training exercise off Jakarta that he has the opportunity to put all his training to good use. Well constructed, full of adolescent wish-fulfillment and almost believable, this is an undemanding page-turner in the spirit of Alex Rider and Co. that will appeal to parents as well as kids. Let the sequels begin. (Thriller. 12 & up)

The King of all Teen spy books., April 15, 2009
Amazing;Awesome;Brilliant;Loved it.
Slow start, the author wanted to bring Jason to life, but I still found I could not put it down. In the end I wanted to follow him to school and everywhere.
The book is fast and easy to read, not the normal young adult books I read. saying that I loved it, it was fun, fast and at some points very emotional.
The realationship between Jason and his father was very well written and brought Jason to life. Never before in a young adult teen spy book has the hero been put over his dad's knee and spanked!
I was like "What the"!!! but it made it seem very real life and what would happen.
Unlike Young James Bond and Alex Rider, this was more real, Jason was not a snob goody goody. He experimented with things just like we all do, he and his friend Scott even got caught looking at adult magazines.
When you get behind that, you have a mental picture of Jason Steed, a tough little guy with a big heart and feelings.
When he has to get tough, he is the best and the author makes it seem so real.
I cried when I read the part in the aircraft when he got shot and his father was shouting at him on the radio, I dont think any book has done that to me before.
I will finish by saying it is THE best book I have ever read, actually I have read it twice now.
I don't know who the author is but this guy has a talent, he painted a picture for me with every single scene. I cant see anything else written by him, Amazing. I would love to see it as a film.
The story left with room for Book two, I will be looking for it.
